While results consisted of mostly positive features, participants also identified certain negative aspects, such as conflict among members. Results from the study provide a succinct, member-derived, structured inventory of the role of BDSM communities that can serve to validate and synthesize existing research, improve dissemination of community voice around BDSM, and inform future research. The endeavor of research is informed by and contributes to the larger social norms and beliefs in which it is situated. This is especially true for the scientific study of alternative sexuality, where marginalization and a reticence to discuss sexual matters deemed taboo has at times slowed the progress of sex research.

<aside> 😈 While it is not established what subset of those interested in BDSM take part in organized communities, our findings suggest that those involved in communities may experience benefits such as the mitigation of social stigma, personal and spiritual growth, education around safety and practice, and other positive impacts.
